I just built a computer on the weekend primarily as a test server to assist in study for VMware and Microsoft certifications. To cut a long story short (a future post perhaps), ESXi installed ok but would not boot from a local SSD drive. I tried all sorts of options in the BIOS and installing the latest Citrix Xenserver with the same result – no bootup after install. I was about to try Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2012 when I came across this post on Derek Seaman’s Blog:
Essentially, when ESXi install media is starting, I just had to press Shift-O and add ‘formatwithmbr’ to the start options (see above post for instructions). Thanks Derek. This made my weekend!
